Debt Free

You may be familiar with Dave Ramsey and his Financial Peace program. He provides a plan to help people get out of debt. When someone is completely debt-free, many times they will call in to his radio program and shout, “We’re Debt-Free!” This is definitely something to celebrate. People carry a weight when mired in financial debt. What a feeling to be free of that burden.

As I was reading through Romans 3, I thought about this shout by people across the country. I realized that even greater than being financially debt-free is the realization that spiritually we can be debt-free.

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:23-24 NKJV).

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23 ESV).

Do we get this excited about our spiritual freedom? Is it perhaps because those couples or individuals worked so hard to become debt-free that it was an anthem of their own accomplishment?

I can’t say I’m 100% financially debt-free, but I can say that I am 100% spiritually debt-free, and it’s not because of any effort on my part. My debts were paid. I am no longer mired in a spiritual weight of sin. Jesus paid that for me.

If you have received God’s gift of grace and mercy through Jesus Christ, join me in shouting,

I’m DEBT-FREE!!!

We now have the true peace that comes only from God which surpasses all understanding. Why do we hesitate to share it with others?
