How well can you read this paragraph?

I cnduo’t bvleiee taht I culod aulaclty uesdtannrd waht I was rdnaieg. Unisg the icndeblire pweor of the hmuan mnid, aocdcrnig to rseecrah at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it dseno’t mttaer in waht oderr the lterets in a wrod are. The olny irpoamtnt tihng is taht the frsit and lsat ltteer be in the rhgit pclae. The rset can be a taotl mses and you can sitll raed it whoutit a pboerlm. Tihs is bucseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey ltteer by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe. Aaznmig!

The above paragraph is a great example of why you need a proofreader. I find small errors in almost every book I read. Whether it’s transpositions of letters, correct spelling of a word but not the correct word for that sentence (think hear or here; too, two, or to; lose or loose), the software available to us today can still miss things. Because we know what we meant to write, and our editor does also, some things can be missed.

This is where I can help. It’s a gift I have (although sometimes a curse when you place red circles around typos on your child’s note from their teacher).

I don’t offer editing, but during proofreading, if there are obvious edits needed, I can suggest them.

Examples from my proofreading:

  • Title on cover of book did not match title printed at the top of inside pages: We’re Not vs We Aren’t
  • Use of the word “were” instead of “we’re” (apostrophe left out)
  • Explanatory paragraph stating a list of five items, but there were only four
  • Missing punctuation at the end of a sentence at the end of a page
  • Scripture references that dropped the chapter or verse reference
