Are Your Spices in Alphabetical Order
We recently made some updates to our kitchen. Having to clear out a few cabinets inspired me to declutter those areas, which then carried over to the rest of the kitchen and then to other parts of the house. Let’s just say there were several boxes of donations.
My spices have been in Tupperware spice containers and alphabetized on the back of my pantry door for years. I’ve long wanted to place them in glass jars. Well, I have now formally decanted them, and most are now in alphabetical order in the drawer next to my stove. The baking spices are alphabetical on a turntable in the cabinet above where I stand to mix things for baking.
So what does any of this have to do with treasures in scripture? I find that I have a more detailed, traditional organizing style. This carries over to other areas of my life, which sometimes includes my study of scripture. I create or find a daily plan and have a hard time if I miss a day. But I am reminded that God does not always speak to us on a schedule, definitely not our schedule.
It’s in the quiet moments of disorganization that He sometimes speaks the clearest.
This year I’ve been reading through the Bible chronologically. Have I missed any days? Yes. Have I skipped any chapters? Yes. But I’ve learned it’s not about checking off boxes (which I love to do). It’s about time with the Lord and what He shows me each day. Sometimes the chronological approach causes me to ask questions and follow a rabbit trail, but the next day I come back to where I left off. And that’s okay.
Maybe next year I will read through the Bible alphabetically. Or maybe I’ll study the fruit of the spirit alphabetically.
Do you have a Bible reading plan? How do you deal with missing a day or spending more time on rabbit trails than you planned?
“The Berean Jews were of more noble character … for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true” (Acts 7:11).
