Knowing the Will of God
How do I know God’s will for my life?
Is there a magic formula? No.
Is there a checklist? No.
Is there a certain prayer to pray? No.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
This is the will of God for you. What is this? Rejoice, pray, give thanks.
What else?
Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
1 Peter 3:17 says, “For it is better, if it is the will of God, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.”
Okay, but none of those things tell me specifically which job to take, where to move, who to marry. You’re looking for His will for your specific circumstance, and these verses don’t address that.
Well, perhaps they do. I’ve found in my life that when I do the things that God specifically tells me to do from His word, He then leads my heart to other answers I’m seeking. When I follow His will in these areas, He then reveals His will in other areas. I must first be in His word to know what He says and receive His direction.
Rejoicing, praying, giving thanks, renewing our mind with His word, being willing to suffer for what is right. Walking in light, walking in love, being kind, so many other things He encourages us in how to live.
If you are seeking His will for a specific situation, I challenge you to first do what He has already told us to do and see if He doesn’t further lead you in the right direction for your individual circumstances. Will the answers come overnight? They might. They might not. But living in His revealed will takes us so much further along to His specific will for our situation.
