Because I Said So – When Obedience is Tough
As a child I never liked the phrase “because I said so” in response to the question why. So, when I had children, I changed it to “because that’s what I think is best.” Well, my children didn’t like that any better than I had liked “because I said so” as a child.
Have you ever asked why as an adult? I recently thought of this considering what God’s word says to us.
We are called to obedience without reason or, perhaps, the reason is because God said so or God thinks it’s best. He wouldn’t ask it of us if He didn’t. Most likely because we don’t understand why, or we don’t see the bigger picture.
Knowing what is best for our children when they are young should have taught us that our heavenly Father only wants the best for us.
How do I know what obedience God asks of me? First, I must read His word. Next, I must ask for His direction.
Love one another as I have loved you. But Lord, people can be so unlovable. But that’s what I think is best.
Forgive as God in Christ forgave you. But Lord, I still hurt from what happened. Forgive because I said so.
Wow! Obedience can be tough. But we aren’t expected to do these things on our own. As a follower of Jesus Christ, we have the Holy Spirit to help us and make obedience possible.
When God says to do something, I simply, or maybe not so simply, need to ask,
“Do I want what I want or what He wants? What is His best for me?”
“Am I asked to do this on my own or with His strength? Who holds the future in His hands?”
Do you ever find obedience to be tough? Does it help knowing God loves you and wants the best for you? It helps me, when I choose to remember.
