Nearsighted vs Godsighted

There are days I give my eyes a break from wearing contacts. I can sit at my desk and work without any issues, but I need to put on my glasses for distance, which includes driving.

I remember when I started wearing glasses. I was in my twenties. It didn’t seem like they made much difference until someone brought my attention to the leaves on the trees.

I looked out the window of my office at the trees across the parking lot. No problem. I could see those trees clearly. I could even see the leaves. Then I put on my glasses and looked at the same trees. I was amazed. Not only could I see that the trees had leaves, but I could also see the individual leaves. I can’t describe the difference, and my eyes weren’t that bad. It was like someone turned on a light and magnified the details.

As I think about that initial pair of glasses, I also think about how I still walk around the house without them when not wearing my contacts. While I can see, it’s still amazing the difference in clarity when I put them on.

The same thing is true in the way we see our lives and the world around us. It’s true of the decisions we make. We think we see things as they are. We think we are making the right decisions. We think we know, and then we open the Bible.

“The entrance of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple” (Psalm 119:130).

God’s Word makes everything clear, even when we didn’t know it wasn’t. It brings truth to light. It shines light on the circumstances around us and gives everything clarity. Reading the Bible is like putting on glasses and seeing the details in the leaves on the trees for the first time.

And just like continuing to not wear my glasses at times, sometimes I don’t read the Bible like I should. At those times, the details get fuzzy, and only by opening up Scripture again do things become clear.

I challenge you to read God’s Word today and tomorrow and every day. Then look at the world around you through His eyes. You might be surprised by what you see.

“Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life’” (John 8:12).
