A Little Good News

News headlines pop up on my phone each day. I’ve learned to ignore most, so why don’t I just cancel the app bringing them to my attention? Sometimes it’s hard to let go of the need to know what’s going on in the world.

I believe we should be informed regarding the events of the time in which we live, but sometimes we allow information overload into our lives. At least I do.

The Olympics opening event received great opposition. Many Olympians that worked so hard for so long won medals. One didn’t place, then she did, then she didn’t. My head is spinning.

Secret Service is impressive. Secret Service is failing.

Rain is on the way to cure the drought. Too much rain is on the way causing flooding.

Do I take in as much good news as bad?

More important — Do I take in as much of God’s words as I do the world’s words? The contrast is great.

While I need to be alert to what is going on in the world, I need the peace that only comes from God. The world brings confusion, but God brings peace.

“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you” (John 14:27).

“The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).

We live in this world, but we are no longer of this world.

“I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world” (John 17:14).

To take it a step further, reading or quoting a scripture is great, but am I applying the truth of that scripture in my life? Am I living it?

What scriptures bring you peace when chaos surrounds you?

Joe and I just had this very conversation on a recent road trip. I stay off line for most of the current events and let him filter through the news so I only get what is most important to know. He keeps up with it all because of his job. No sense in both of us getting mired down in the mud, right? But I also know when to tell him when I’ve reached the edge of the abyss and have had a sufficiency for the moment. Having learned to recognize my boundaries has been a huge help in maintaining my peace. But so has trusting God to be sovereign over it all.

I reach the edge weekly. I have to keep the balance with the scales tipped in God’s Word to keep peace. Thank you for sharing.
