Fragments

John 6:12-13 says “So when they were filled, He said to His disciples, ‘Gather up the fragments that remain, so that nothing is lost.’ Therefore they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten.”

These were Jesus’s words to the twelve disciples after he fed the 5,000 from a little boy’s lunch of two fish and five loaves. I’ve often wondered the significance of scripture telling us there were twelve baskets of fragments picked up. Why not just collect the leftovers.

So this past week I stopped to give it some thought and research. I discovered and contemplated three things.

First, the significance of the twelve disciples serving and collecting twelve baskets, one each, and that being a possible provision for the disciples in their service. I found one commentary giving this thought.

Second, the significance of the time and culture and nothing going to waste. In the same way, every piece, fragment, of our life is important to God. Nothing goes unnoticed and no opportunity is wasted.

Third, an emphasis on God’s abundant provision to us being above what we ask or expect.

The takeaways for me are how God provides for me, how important each part of my life is to God, and how His provision is more than I can fathom.

Let me know your thoughts on how you might see this in your own life.
