In Search of the Truth

Who decides what is disinformation? You might think it’s the Disinformation Governance Board, which is a new advisory board of the US Department of Homeland Security. But is this reliable? News sources are now reporting that the disinformation board fell victim to misinformation and has been, at least temporarily, shut down.

So, what is misinformation or disinformation?

  • Misinformation refers to false or out-of-context information presented as fact without necessarily having an intent to mislead. It could be a MIStake in information.
  • Disinformation is a type of misinformation that is intentionally false and intended to mislead. It is manipulation. It is DIShonest. It is a LIE.
  • In either case, the information is incorrect. It is counterfeit.

The opposite of either is truth.

I have many times heard that the training to identify counterfeit money begins with studying the genuine. Those that know the genuine firsthand will recognize the counterfeit. This also holds true for absolute truth, and there is only one source of truth. The Word of God.

“The Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14).

Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).

“The Spirit of truth . . . will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13).

“the devil . . . does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him . . . he is a liar” (John 8:44).

We shouldn’t be comparing news stations or surveys of public opinion for truth. We need to study and immerse ourselves in THE truth. Don’t rely on me or anyone else for truth. We need to research for ourselves what God’s Word says so we KNOW with first-hand knowledge (not second or third hand information that may be a MIStake or DIShonest).

When we are immersed in the Word of God, then when dishonest information is placed before us, we will bristle at the blatant contradiction to the truth we have studied and come to know firsthand.

Study truth to know the error. Study the Word of God.
